Not About Nightingales (University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, 2015)

By Tennessee Williams
Director: Tom Mitchell
Scenic Designer: Mike Salazar
Props Master: Lindsey Sample

Setting: Early 1930s Run Down Prison, North East, USA
Subject Matter: Prisoner mistreatment, Hunger strikes, Escape, Complicated love, Abuse, Death

This production was my first Props Master position in Grad School. My major challenge for this how was set decorating. Since I had never done set decorating before, it was new to spend time thinking of every little thing I could use to fill out this worn down 1930s prison and prison office. Most of my efforts were spent in the prison office since the show was centered around the mistreatment of prisoners, it would have felt wrong to over prop the prison cells. However, the prison office was a lot more fun to decorate. What’s not seen in the images are the extra amounts of paper boxes, junk, photos hung, etc. I crammed trash in corners, stacked papers and files on top of everything, and added a last touch of a thermostat. Details make the world come to fruition.
