Bat Boy was my last show in Undergrad, and the first time as a Props Artisan. I chose two major props to make: a severed cow’s head, and two dead geese (one that bled on stage). Since I was only in charge of two props, I was able to spend more time crafting them than I would have been able to if I had Prop Mastered the entire show. I fully designed both props, but the biggest challenge was the geese, since every photo or video I found of the bleeding moment was just a blackout and then you’d see blood, it didn’t solve what I wanted to do, which is have the goose actually pour blood into Bat Boy’s Mouth. This was solved by sewing geese (without a pattern) and including a hydration pack with a bite valve (see process photos above). The cow head was also a challenge because it was my first foam carving project, and as far as I know, the school still takes the head out of storage for the theatre’s recruitment table, so she’s still in good shape.
