The Grapes of Wrath is a classic piece of American literature that is incredibly well known and is a powerful piece that illuminates the struggle of many farming families during The Great Depression. Our biggest design idea was to express scenically the wide and far reaching landscape of our country. This meant that the stage was never intended to be overly realistic or cluttered. The iconic car that the family travels in was made entirely of a platform and props. This was to illustrate that they were literally traveling with everything they had. As the show progressed and they lost family members and searched for permanence, they slowly lost more and more of the “car” until there was only a platform left. I think the major challenges of this show was maintaining minimalist realism. To not clutter our stage, but accentuate the action.
